Welcome to Humanities and Social Sciences
Welcome to Youngstown State University and the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS)! Home to Anthropology, History, Philosophy, Politics and International Relations, and Sociology, our department is where curiosity meets real-world impact. Here, we don’t just study the world—we actively dive into the big questions that shape it.
If you’ve ever found yourself asking What does it mean to be human? How do we build a more equitable society? or How can I create real change?—you belong here.
Active, Hands-On Learning
All of our degrees are built on doing, not just reading. We emphasize experiential learning at every level, giving you the chance to practice your skills in real time. In our programs, you will engage in:
- Hands-On Laboratory Work: Analyze artifacts, study material culture, or engage in digital mapping and data analysis.
- Rigorous Debate: Test your ideas, challenge perspectives, and master the art of cogent, persuasive argumentation.
- Original Research: Conduct fieldwork, dive into archival documents, and build the analytical skills that top employers and graduate schools demand.
- Travel Opportunities: Take courses with domestic or international travel components, study abroad for a semester or whole year.
Faculty with Real-World Impact
Our professors are world-class mentors actively working to solve contemporary social, ethical, and environmental issues. When they aren't in the classroom, you’ll find them participating in global archaeological digs, testifying before Congress, serving on hospital ethics boards, or aiding local law enforcement. They bring this front-line expertise straight to your courses, student organizations, and campus centers.
HSS graduates leave YSU as lifelong learners and community leaders, ready to step into thriving careers or elite graduate programs worldwide.
We invite you to explore our diverse programs below, connect with our vibrant campus community, and find your passion. We can't wait to see you in class!
