PhD Fellowships

PhD Fellowships

Doctoral fellows provide a service to the institution and also gain valuable experience through their special association with the faculty. Doctoral fellows are assigned to research, teaching, or other appropriate work experiences related to their academic program.

The appointee to the PhD in Materials Science and Engineering or the PhD in Health Sciences Doctoral Fellowship is expected to devote a minimum of twenty hours per week to fellowship duties.

Doctoral fellows are required to be full-time graduate students as defined in the Graduate Catalog

Institutionally funded first-year doctoral fellowships offer a stipend of $23,500 for one calendar year. Continuing PhD students, and those funded from external grants, may be offered a stipend in a higher amount, dependent upon the recommendation of the advisor, approval of the STEM or BCHHS dean, and availability of funds.

Normally, the doctoral fellow receives an appointment for a period of one calendar year beginning with the fall semester. To remain eligible for a fellowship, fellows must discharge their duties satisfactorily and maintain good academic standing in their coursework. Good academic standing for graduate students is a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 in graduate-level courses.

A student appointed as a doctoral fellow will be paid a stipend and receive tuition remission. Tuition remission includes:

  • Instructional fees for graduate courses required to complete a single degree program
  • Non-resident tuition surcharge
  • Student parking permit
